Having a new PC does not guarantee that you will operate without lags. Typically, newly acquired PCs have lots of junkware. This translates into many applications or programs that are not essential. Junkware run as a background processes, consume RAM and slow down a PC. Uninstalling these programs one by one is time-consuming and they might leave unwanted files behind.
Having junk files is another major issue of every computer and other smart gizmos. We can get these files from web surfing, bloatware and other apps or programs that constantly connect to the internet. The junk files also slow down our computers. Sometimes, we experience a computer that freezes and crashes, due to the excessive amount of junk files. The unfortunate part here is that we risk losing unsaved documents when these events happen.
So, here’s a guide on how you’ll fix these issues by taking your PC back to its pristine state.
Microsoft’s Refresh Windows tool – What is it and how does it work?
The tool is recently released by Microsoft to help users clean their PCs back to a newly formatted state. The tool will help you purge junk files and bloatware from your PC.
Getting the tool
Click the Windows button on the lower left side of the screen. Then, go to SETTINGS —> Category for Update & Security. On the left side pane, click RECOVERY. You will see an option that says “Clean installation of Windows”. Next, click the link to get the Windows refresh tool. You will be redirected to a website and you will need to download and install the program.
If the procedure seems a bit complicated, you can download the tool here.
Starting the process
After the installation, the tool will ask for permission. Click “YES”, then the License Terms window will appear. Read the license agreement and click the “Accept” button to proceed. You will be given two options:
- Keep personal files only – This option is suitable if you don’t wish to delete any of your files.
- Nothing – All of the files and programs will be deleted.
Hit the start button to proceed. This may take some time, so you might want to play your favorite game, or have a coffee break while waiting. After the download just follow on-screen instructions to proceed to the next step.
Note: Windows will download a 3GB Windows ISO. If you are using mobile data, we encourage you to connect to a home network, because standard data charges may apply. If you are going to select option 2, after the download you may need to set up your Microsoft account again. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
After Windows fixed itself, you can login and proceed to the desktop. Congratulations! Your PC is back to its pristine state.
You can now start to reinstall all the applications or programs that are useful to you. After installing all the programs, you can customize your desktop. Using the refresh tool for newly purchased PCs or laptops is advised, so they won’t be burned down by pre-installed bloatware.
