Superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy are guaranteed to overcome us with excitement this year. 2016 is already upon us and it’s expected to be a huge year for movie lineups. Here’s our top 10 list of the most expected cinematic releases:

10Jason Bourne

Matt Damon

Despite the fact that The Bourne Legacy received mixed reviews from critics in 2012, the yet untitled 5th Bourne film is highly anticipated as Matt Damon will reprise his role as Jason Bourne and Julia Stiles returns as Nicky Parsons. Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel are also on the cast list of what we expect to be the very definition of an action thriller. Built as a sequel to the Bourne Ultimatum, Bourne 5 really got the world buzzing with the return of director Paul Greengrass, the man in the chair for the second and third Bourne movies. Now that Damon and Greengrass are back together, we are really excited to see what they’re going to do and how they’re going to continue the story of Jason Bourne. The film was set for release on July 29, 2016.

9Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed

Love or hate the franchise, there’s a movie coming out and it has a great shot to be great. So far there is no trailer, only a couple of photos and basic story details: Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), gains the skills of a Master Assassin and traced his lineage to the secret Assassins society. The cast list is a fairly stellar one: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons. Although Ubisoft will have the final say in just about everything, which is pretty unusual for a video game film, Assassin’s Creed will be directed by Justin Kurzel who got really good critic reviews for Macbeth in 2015. The movie is to be released on December 21, 2016.

8The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book

We’ve all read the book or seen the cartoon. We know the story: an orphan boy is raised by animals in the jungle and goes through all sorts of funny and scary adventures. For the 2016 version of the story, Jon Favreau decided to combine both the book and the 1967 animated movie and the result is an amazing 3D live-animation fantasy movie, full of adventure. The visual effects and CGI work for animals and outdoors are mind-blowing. The movie stars and introduces Neel Sethi as Mowgli and the cast list for the voices is phenomenal. We have the voices of Scarlett Johansson,Idris Elba, Christopher Walken, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o and Ben Kingsley. “The Bare Necessities” and “Trust in Me songs” will be included in the film, along with other new songs written by Richard M. Sherman who also wrote songs for the 1967 animated film. This Disney adventure is scheduled for release on April 15, 2016.

7Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch is the intelligent Doctor Strange

This is one of Marvel’s upcoming releases that we’re really looking forward to. Doctor Strange is a surgeon whose career was destroyed after an accident that leaves him unable to perform surgery. He goes through a lot of struggles to survive, all until he finds the Ancient One ( aka Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme), who teaches him the mystic arts. Doctor Strange becomes a superhero that fights evil to save the world. Benedict Cumberbatch is a great casting choice for the egotistical and intelligent Doctor Strange and we just know he is perfect for this role, as we’ve already seen in Sherlock. The role of the Ancient One will be played by none other than the fiercely talented Tilda Swinton and the director is Scott Derrickson. Now, this guy knows how to do horror so we expect him to bring that scary, creepy element to Doctor Strange.  We expect to see this Marvel on November 4, 2016.

6Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

If you like superhero movies but you like the supervillain best, Suicide Squad is just the movie for you! “Worst of the worst” supervillains are recruited by a secret government agency to undertake black-ops missions. In return, they are promised commuted sentences. Although each of the villains operate as independent individuals, they must put aside their differences and work together as a unit to get the tasks done. The film is both written and directed by David Ayer so this could give a more unified vision to the movie. Suicide Squad stars an ensemble cast from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to Will Smith’s Deadshot to Jared Leto’s new look Joker. Although we’re not used to see Will Smith other than a leading man there are still high hopes that this is going to be a great movie. So save the date: August 5, 2016.

5Deadpool

Ben Affleck puts on a Superhero mask

This is a movie you definitely should be looking forward to since it’s been long in the making. The development of the film began in February 2004. Deadpool comes out on February 12, 2016 and so far it has great, very funny, ad campaign. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, a mercenary who is the subject of an experiment that gives him regenerative powers. However, with this great power came a lot of bad scarring and a dose of insanity. Wade Wilson becomes Deadpool and starts hunting down the man who destroyed his life. We’ve seen Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool before, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine(2009), but the 2016 version has a closer resemblance to the comic book character.

4Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was maybe the most hotly anticipated movie of 2015. So anything subtitled “A Star Wars Story” is gonna get the most of our attention. The film is the first stand-alone story from the Star Wars Universe chronologically set just before the events of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”. The movie is expected to be very different from “The Force Awakens”, there’s not going to be that much dealing with the force as in the Skywalker Saga because the story centers on a band of rebels that want to steal the Death Star plans. But we’ll see a bit of magic, and we’ll see Darth Vader. The movie is set for release on December 16, 2016.

3X-Men: Apocalypse

Apocalypse

Although the title may point to the end of our favorite characters, it is actually an introduction for a new face. The world’s first and most powerful mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), awakens and plans to bring humanity to extinction. Lead by Charles Xavier, the X-men must fight  to defeat him. Bryan Singer is sure to blow our minds again with this follow-up to the amazing X-Men: Days of Future Past. Even if the story is packed with superpowered mutants, Bryan Singer knows how to bring the focus on a just a few characters. This is his fourth film in the X-Men franchise, afterall. With the cast and the writers to rely on, this movie seems set for success. We can’t wait to see it on May 27, 2016.

2Captain America: Civil War

Captain America v Iron Man

The Russo brothers are back again and they are handling one of the most coveted storylines in the Marvel comic books. If so far we’ve seen the Avengers fight villains to save humanity, this time we see them in a much more difficult situation. As politicians pass new legislative bills and install a system of accountability for superheroes, a rift is caused between Captain America and Iron Man, former friends and allies. The Avengers find themselves divided into two factions standing on opposite sides. Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Ant-Man are all set to fight together against Captain America and his team. The Avengers fighting each other is generally the best part to watch, we just hope that despite the chock full cast of superheroes, the focus remains on Capt. The movie is set for release on May 6, 2016.

1Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman

We’re about to see a clash between two of the biggest, most recognizable heroes in history of cinema on March 25, 2016. Batman fears that Superman’s actions are left unchecked so he decides to take on him as the world struggles to decide which is the hero it needs. As the two fight each other, a great danger threatens mankind. Although the two legendary superheroes are the center of the story, it look like another “goddess” will join them. Gal Gadot will be Wonder Woman. It’s not yet clear what her role will be in the movie, but it is rumored that a Wonder Woman solo film could follow in the next years. So will Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel put their differences aside and unite to save humanity?

Because there are so many movies coming out this year that didn’t make it on our list, here are some honorable mentions: Independence Day: Resurgence, Zoolander 2, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Ghostbusters.

Do you agree with our list? What is your top 10 list?
