If you remember, a while ago we were talking about some of the best DIY home security systems. The Arlo Pro Security System was not on the market at that time. Luckily, we’ve found today enough time to analyze its feature. In our opinion, the Arlo Pro is the simplest way to supervise your house and the surroundings. Being wire free, without any Internet or power cords, you won’t need technical knowledge or support to install this system. Moreover, this system has waterproof indoor/outdoor cameras which won’t need any covers.
|Dimensions||3.1 x 1.9 x 2.8 inches|
|Video Resolution||1280 x 720|
|Batteries||3 Lithium ion batteries required. (included)|
|Price||Less than $800 (depending on the number of cameras you need), and the good news is that sometimes you may get it at a discounted rate.|
The Arlo Pro has a sleek surface, with a cylinder cast and discreet design. If you decide to purchase this system you will receive:
With this new system, Arlo included a two way radio. This is perfect for the women who are living alone, or for the home alone children. Although this gadget has some bugs (sometimes it takes a bit too long for the microphone to connect and by the time it connects, the person outside might be gone) it usually does what it’s supposed to do.
Since we’re still at the negative side, we may mention that due to the fact that Arlo Pro is wire free, you may encounter some small problems with the batteries. Even though the cameras come with the batteries fully charged, they will eventually drain out of energy. In addition, if you live in a crowded area, the battery life will be shorter in time. Thus, as a starting tip: when you install these cameras, do not put them in hard to reach places, as you may need to access them every now and then. Anyway, for those of you who want to have a security system in a place where you do not go too often, Arlo Pro has a wired option as well.
The amazing fact regarding this security system is that it has a free cloud storage and a live recording capacity. Connecting it to your WiFi network is a breeze. You will need a good Internet connection (at least 1Mbps) and a disposable port on your router. If your short on connectivity, you can add an USB drive to the base and the camera will record even without Internet. Unfortunately, in this way you won’t be able to see live what’s happening at your home.
The cameras have a good video resolution which is configurable up to 1280 x 720, a video format of H.264. The CMOS sensor provides full colors and an auto adaptive image. It has adjustable sensitivity and another awesome fact – it can send quick email alerts or push notifications. The Arlo Pro camera it has decent night vision with 850 nm LEDs which illuminate up to 25 feet plus an IR filter which processes the image.
The fact that the camera has magnetic mounts makes it very easy to install it almost anywhere, and because of the small size, it’s quite hard to notice it. On the downside, sometimes the camera has video distortions, even if the video quality is set on maximum. Plus, sometimes, it goes offline, and it must be taken to the base station to restart it.
Easy to install, pretty small (2.8 x 1.9 x 3.1 inches) and weighting only 1.59 pounds, this camera is pretty discreet. It can resist to pretty harsh temperatures (-4° – 113° F) so you don’t need to worry about the weather conditions when you install it outside.
The base station needs a fast internet for the interface port. It has Power, Camera and Internet LED indicators. With an internal antenna and with a 300+ feet sight, you will be able to install the cameras all over your property, as long as your internet connection allows you to.
Management and monitoring
Even though a couple of supplementary features have been pulled out, the interface hasn’t changed from the previous model. One thing that pops out is the fact that an USB icon appears on the screen. This shows you the local storage space available for recording. Another thing that stands out is the fact that Arlo Pro added an audio trigger to start a record if you need or want to.
Last but not least, the siren device is included into the base station. You can set it to activate to some impulse, or you can activate it manually. Remember that once this siren activates, it can be very loud.
With the Base Station, now you have a local storage choice. Using an USB flash drive, you can store the videos that you want for a longer period of time.
Some things that Arlo Pro could consider for the next generations of security systems are:
- More exchange batteries, so as long as one is charging, you can use the spare one.
- A volume control for the siren from the Base Station.
- The capacity of the camera to update the master screen e.g. every 10 minutes.
- A touch monitor, to make it user friendly, even for children.
- Improve the audio system, to reduce the delay.
While Arlo Pro was already making good security systems, with this new one, they have raised the bar to another level. Even though this system is not perfect, features like wireless sensors, magnetic mounts, night vision, large storage, the new siren and the two-way radio system make it a very useful security setup for your property.
What do you think? Would you feel safe with this system watching over your house and property?
