U.S based researchers believe that they’ve discovered a giant planet, considered to be the 9th Planet of our solar system, named as Planet X. This may be a big entity, located in a distant elliptical plane.
The newly discovered planet is believed to be 10 times bigger than Earth and the orbit of the said planet is 20 times farther from the sun. Planet X’s one full orbit around the Sun would take 10,000 up to 20,000 years.
Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin of California Institute of Technology claim they have found the big planet. The two researchers think that we cannot limit ourselves believing that the end of our solar system is Neptune. There are a lot of extensive chunks of unknown heavenly bodies out there that are waiting to be found. They also said that during ancient times, two other planets that were discovered.
Both researchers are thrown by a question whether Planet X truly exists. Mike Brown pointed out that the big planet is 5,000 times heavier than Pluto. The other distinctive characteristic about this planet is its orbit.
It’s “the most planet-y of the planets in the whole solar system,” – Mike Brown said in an interview. Brown is also famous for his efforts to debunk Pluto’s title as the dwarf planet.
Both researchers relate their work in an issue that was raised in the Astronomical Journal. They claim that Planet X has a surface full of icy objects. The debris of the big planet was traced beyond Neptune’s Kuiper Belt.
Does the 9th planet really exists?
Batygin admitted that that they are quite doubtful if Planet X really exists. They are working round the clock to provide information and more proof about the new planet. Because of the circumstances of having a large solar system, that doesn’t mean that the existing planets and other solar bodies were already identified. It’s a big world out there and we have explored just a bit of it. “For the first time in over 150 years, there is solid evidence that the solar system’s planetary census is incomplete.” Batygin stated in an interview. Batygin is an assistant professor that specializes in planetary science.
The trail for the Planet X started in 2014, when Brown and his colleagues published a paper mentioning that there are 13 distant objects which can be found in the Kuiper Belt. The distant objects have an unclear orbital feature, which made them theorize the existence of another planet that is out there revolving around the sun that has the longest orbit. At that time, they believed that planet X is a small planet.
Brown’s team firmly believed that there’s a considerable distance between the objects found in Kuiper Belt. The team insisted that some parts of Kuiper Belt were not yet discovered. They also explained about the gravity’s role on keeping the sub-population of the objects grouped together. To make that possible, the Kuiper Belt needs to mass about 100 times than today’s actual mass. That made them conclude the existence of another planet.
The team ran a computer simulated planetary orbital path that is closest to the sun where they demonstrated the significance of their theory. The orbit is 180 degrees across all other planets. Planet X was expected to be found in a distant Kuiper Belt that was shown in their simulation. There are a lot of mysteries in the Kuiper Belt. One of these mysteries is the alignment of the objects and their orbits, which inf fact traces the existence of that object.
In 2013, Brown named one of the objects found in the Kuiper Belt as Sedna. These objects are dissimilar from the standard variation of objects found in Kuiper Belt. Sedna is said to have a gravitational kick out from planet Neptune. After the kicked out of gravity, Sedna will return back to it but never gets too close for a planetary collision.
The simulation of the researchers predicted that there are many other objects that are orbiting perpendicularly in the Kuiper Belt. The team had been conducting their research for more than three years. They found out about four objects that are tracing a perpendicular line orbiting along Neptune. They plotted the position of the four objects including their orbits. Remarkably, they match the computer simulation.
“When we found that, my jaw sort of hit the floor.” – Brown mentioned in an interview.
When the simulation successfully matched and aligned the distant Kuiper Belt, the simulation created objects similar to Sedna. “The feeling is like you killed two birds at the same time by a single stone.“
Brown also said that it is possible to have 5 objects, not 4, because of the displacement of the planetary cores. The four cores wolfed all the gas all over the place making the formation of the four vaporous planets of Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Theoretically, if Planet X will be the fifth core, the planet might have been ejected into the farthest distance, with an odd orbit that goes close to Saturn and Jupiter.
Despite the astounding revelation and theories delivered by CalTech’s researcher, there are numerous doubts and objections about their theories. Other scientists want them to have an actual proof, not just a simple guess by doing simulated investigation and research. The science community wants to see a solid proof or an actual image of the said planet.
Even though there are several critics, the CalTech’s team is determined to prove that Planet X truly exist. If their research proves correct, then they will rewrite the history books.
